Who are these Internet FAQs intended for?
Primarily for people who want to make money on the Internet using Affiliate
Programs by becoming an Affiliate. Merchants, however, should
read these FAQ's as well because they might find out that they could increase
their sales significantly by setting up an Affiliate Program of
their own or better yet by joining one of the many Affiliate Networks (i.e.
WebSponsors ,
Cyberbounty
,
Commission Junction
,
or LinkShare) as a Merchant. What is the easiest way to make money on the internet? In our opinion, it is in what we call "Internet Marketing". Internet Marketing is using the Internet to attract customers & direct them to Internet Merchants, who compensate the Internet Marketer (usually called an Affiliate) in return. The Internet marketer doesn't need to worry about product inventory, product shipping, processing checks & credit cards, etc. The Internet Marketer need only focus on locating & directing customers to Merchants.
The best analogy is the relationship between a company that makes a product
(Merchant) and an advertising firm (Affiliate) who uses the various media
available to attract customers (usually called Visitors, because
Internet users "visit" Web Sites) to the products that the
Merchant is selling. In return the company compensates the advertising firm
for their efforts. The customer is also happy because they were able to purchase
something that they wanted. Truly a win-win-win situation. The
Affiliate helps the Visitor find the Merchant. Everybody
wins! What are Revenue Sharing programs, Affiliate programs, Associate programs, Partner programs, etc.?
These are all synonyms for what we call Affiliate programs. Affiliate are
sometimes refered to as Associates, Partners, etc. As described above
the basic model in Internet Marketing is an Affiliate helping a
Visitor find a Merchant. However, the Internet
creates a framework that makes dozens of different types
of arrangements, programs, & organizations possible. As we
proceed you will see that there are many other "players" in
the game besides just Affiliates, Merchants, & Visitors.
The possibilities really seem endless. We run across
a different idea or a different wrinkle on an idea
almost daily! If I become an Affiliate what are the mechanics of how I get Visitors to the merchant's site?
Generally, when you join an Affiliate program the Merchant
will provide you with text or Banner links to their site.
The link will contain a special code
that identifies you so that traffic from you will be
properly credited back to you. For instance here is a text link
to an Internet
Marketing Course. Take a look at the URL associated
with it (place you mouse over the hilighted phrase
"Internet Marketing Course" & you will see the URL
at the bottom of your browser) i.e. What if I don't have my own web page?
There are several sources for free Web Pages that you can
use to do Internet Marketing. Look at
FriendPages
or Jayde (at Jayde, look
for the "Free Web Sites" link). All
allow installing Affiliate links.
In all of these cases you can save yourself a lot of work
(Building Web pages from scratch is hard work although it
affords you maximum control & flexibility!). You can
leverage the time you save by not slaving over a hot Web Page to
focus on Promotion. What is harder? Getting Merchants to represent or getting Visitors to come to my site?
One thing you will discover is that Internet Marketing is a buyers market,
i.e. there is never a shortage of Merchants willing to strike up a relationship
with a good Affiliate in the hopes that this will mean an increase in business.
However, getting traffic (Visitors) to your site and/or to the Merchant's
site (usually called Web Site Promotion) is the real challenge! Yet, there
is nothing as exciting as seeing your Promotion efforts pay off in a dramatic
increase in Visitors (& hopefully sales!)! What are Affiliate networks?
Affiliate networks are one of the many interesting players in the Internet
Marketing game. In the basic Affiliate/Merchant model the Merchant needs
to p7rovide the links, make the payments, provide the statistics, etc. for
the Affiliate, or the Merchant can outsource this to a service. This model
results in lots of duplication of effort that the Affiliate network tries
to address. The Affiliate network acts like a matchmaker between potential
Merchants & potential Affiliates. In addition the Affiliate network usually
provides a convenient central location which allows Affiliates to check their
stats in one place & sometimes receive just one big check instead of
lots of little ones. The elimination of the hassle & overhead for Merchants
of dealing with hundreds of Affiliates or for Affiliates dealing with hundreds
of Merchants, makes the Affiliate network a real godsend. Some notable Affiliate
networks that we use are described in the FAQ below about the
differences between pay-per-click, pay-per-lead, pay-per-sale, &
pay-per-impression. What are two-tier and multi-tier systems?
The normal model we have been describing involves 3 parties, i.e. the Visitor,
the Affiliate, & the Merchant. The Affiliate focuses on finding &
attracting Visitors & sending them to the Merchant's Web site. In the
case of Two-Tier & Multi-Tier programs the merchant offers the Affiliate
compensation for attracting & refering new affiliates as well. If
the new Affiliate joins and begins earning money using the basic
Visitor-Affiliate-Merchant model, the refering Affiliate (you) will be
compensated as well. This compensation may take the form of a flat finders
fee, but it usually takes the form of a percentage of the earnings of the
new Affiliate going back to the referring Affiliate. In Multi-Tier programs
Affiliates who refer new Affiliates, who refer new Affiliates, who refer
new Affiliates, will get compensation from all lower levels. Good examples
of this are the
All Advantage
and
Desktop
Horizon programs. In contrast, Two-Tier programs limit the referral
compensation to the new Affiliates directly refered but not Affiliates refering
Affiliates on down the chain. Needless to say Multi-Tier programs have a
greater earnings potential that Two-Tier programs which in turn earn better
than non-tiered programs where all earnings are based upon the
Visitor-Affiliate-Merchant model. What's the difference between pay-per-click, pay-per-lead, pay-per-sale, & pay-per-impression?
In all cases the Merchant compensates the Affiliate for displaying a banner,
button or text link that sends Visitors to the Merchant's site.
Pay-per-click means that the Affiliate is compensated per a fixed
rate each time the banner, button or text link is clicked.
You can start getting paid for clicks in minutes
by setting up a link to
ClickHereToFind.com.
We found pay-per-click a good way to get warmed up since
the immediate feedback is very encouraging as opposed to pay-per-sale
where lots of click thrus need to happen before
you ever make a sale. What the keys to success in Internet Marketing?
Having a Web site gives the Internet Marketer a very flexible vehicle with
which to earn money on the Internet. Keep these guidelines
in mind to improve your results.
(2) Spend 70% of your efforts on Promotion. Building a marketable Web
site & creating relationships with Merchants is not the hard part
of Internet Marketing. Promotion is the hard part and ultimately
determines the success of your Web site(s). How can I learn more about the ins & outs of Internet Marketing?
(1) Make this site a Favorite (Ctrl-D) if you are running
Internet Explorer or Bookmark it (Ctrl-D) if you run Netscape!!
This site is a great place to stay on top of Internet Marketing
developments. This Internet Marketing FAQ is being continuously updated,
new articles are being added to the site in general, and new Web Master
resources are constantly being added. Can I be Merchant and an affiliate at the same time?
Yes, you will see Affiliates who act as Merchants
to get more traffic i.e. if you are an
Affiliate averaging .20 profit per each visitor
that you send to a Merchant, you may be able to act as
a Merchant and pay .05 per click to other Affiliates to send
you traffic and offset the
reduction in profit (from .20 to .15) with an increase
in traffic. How do Merchants & Affiliates get ripped off, & how can I avoid it? For Merchants, the most common way of getting ripped off is in the Pay-per-click programs where unscrupulous Affiliates are generating false, bogus, or low-quality traffic. Some Web-Savy Affiliates do this with clever CGI scripts. Low-Quality traffic results when the Visitors being sent to a Merchant are tricked or duped into thinking they are going to a type of site that is unlike what the Merchant has. They usually leave immediately without benefiting the Merchant while Affiliate still gets paid for the click. For Merchants, getting ripped off is obviously harder in Pay-per-lead and Pay-per-Sale programs. Affiliates can get ripped off by just not getting paid for services rendered. Horror stories abound where the Merchant pays on time the first month to lull the Affiliate into complacency, & then doesn't pay for subsequent months. By the time the Affiliate notices this and wastes further time trying to get the Merchant to correct the problem, the Merchant has gotten several months of free traffic. This is rare, but has happened.
One way that both Merchants & Affiliates can feel
safer is to avoid one on one relationships and work within the
structure of an Affiliate Network. The greater visibility,
per pressure, & power of the Network sponsor help to reduce problems
like these. How can I leverage my Internet Marketing efforts for even more profits? There are several ways to leverage in Internet Marketing. Like the "magic" of compounding, where money invested earns interest which is then re-invested to earn interest on interest, leveraging techniques in Internet Marketing aim to "magically" compound your profits far beyond what your efforts could produce on their own. (1) The most obvious leveraging technique is to give preference to two-tier & multi-tier arrangements over one-tier ones, so that your earnings from your own marketing are supplemented by the earnings of those who you have referred or sponsored. (2) Any program that pays you for renewals or for subsequent visits from customers that you originally refered (even if the subsequent visit did not come thru your site!) gives you good earnings leverage. Many Merchants offer "customers for life" Affiliate arrangements. These can make a real difference as time goes on and you build up a large base of refered customers. Key Evoy's Make Your Site Sell course offers the "customers for life" advantage.
(3) The effort required to get Visitors to your site
if the hardest part of Internet Marketing. If you have a site
that makes your visitors want to Bookmark you and
come back again, then this is great leverage for your promotion
efforts. What kind of products are selling well on the Internet? This depends on whether your Web Site has a specific theme or you have a specific expertise that you must operate within, in which case the products you would offer are pre-determined. However if you are ready & willing to promote any products at all, here are the top two areas that seem to be doing the best currently according to Declan Dunn, author of Winning the Affiliate Game: "What is Selling Online: The Top 10" "1. Computers: If you want to prosper during this Internet economic revolution, then you need to offer the products that people want to buy, quickly and easily. Today, they want computers. Lots of them. They want faster computers and modems, better monitors, and more software. Most people who visit your Web Site are using computers. Our whole Information Age is powered by computers. Here is a conservative estimate of what the future holds for Online Computer Hardware and Software Sales:"
"1996: 140 million "Source: Forrester Research" "While computers are an excellent item to sell, the affiliate programs are even better. The challenge is in selling such a wide variety of products. If you choose to sell computers, make it one of your core focuses and make sure that you know what you are doing." "Once again, dont worry about being an expert. I had a computer salesperson in my staff in San Francisco who had never sold computers. He simply read trade journals, one hour a day for a period of 3 months. By the end of that period he was the best salesperson in our office. Computers have and will be a major part of this market."
"2. Books are the next biggest item sold online
by most estimates. You have a broad selection of affiliate programs to choose
from, including Amazon.coms famous affiliate program. Barnes
and Noble, Books.com, and many other book stores await you. Measure these
stores on the profit margins you can gain from them."
For example, at Research Tank, although we have our hand in several areas (this site being a good example), we have done well focusing on Personal Ads sites. This is a natural for the Internet with it's real time capabilities. Most good Personals sites take advantage of this with Live Chat rooms to go along with the standard listings, photos, Anonymous E-mail, etc. Some sites offer the leverage of crediting you not just with the original sale but also with the high rate of renewals that come later. Remember our FAQ about leverage? One of the best kinds of leverage is getting credited with renewals or future sales of Visitors you send to the Merchant (even if they don't go through your link on subsequent visits!).
The top money maker for us (BY FAR!!!), has been
Sexy
Ads...you should check it out!! The One and Only Personals site and it's spicer version, Alternative Personals are two of the most popular Merchants among Affiliates. Another Merchant that we at Research Tank have had very good success with is Friend Finder, which offers a variety of Personals sites (we promote them all, but we see the best results from Adult Friend Finder and Friend Finder).
